colorado/new mexico
this is the first time driving a stick shift since my friend bonnies car in high school so i was really exited to help with our road trip. we saw wild horses on the side of the road, the moon was out during the day and the countryside crossing into new mexico was desolate and gorgeous. The cooler was packed with goodies so had snacks and lunch all week in the hatchback.

i reused some old brown bags and wrapped some sandwiches in them for our trip. the flowers in the living room were going to be dead by the time we returned, so we took them along and they were beautiful on the dashboard.

1920's AC
Before air conditioners became commonplace, we touted this portable heating/refrigerating plant as a convenient appliance for those who needed a little relief from the summer heat. The machine could not only emit both coolness and heat, but it could adjust the humidity level of your immediate surroundings -- hence the option of instilling a "mountain meadow" atmosphere into your otherwise stuffy living room. Tubes filled with calcium chloride would dry out the air, while an electrically-powered suction fan could push the air through a watery reservoir to create a refreshing little breeze.

Floppy Portraits by Nick Gentry

I don't know about you but I grew up in an era when floppy disks, cassette and VHS tapes were carried about in everyone’s school bag at school. We used to share our music by borrowing handed out tapes swearing we would return it safely. Computer games where shared through multiple floppy disks and we all had our own iterations of the best mix tape straight from the radio. So much content, information and data was embedded into those storage devices and now they seem to be only a slight flashback of our past. What is it to do with this media that we invested so much time, taste and emotion? Even though the days of sharing VHS, floppy disks and cassette tapes are gone, Nick Gentry, a British graduate of Central St. Martins has a strong connection to these media forms and wants you to send him yours if you have any.

RIP NASA space shuttles

my ideas:
>cups and bowls for your art supplies. if you are not using the top of a table or bookshelf much, utilize that accessible space with mugs and cups of pens, pencils, paintbrushes, hammer and nails, nail polish, snacks, wahtever you are into.
>clothes you dont wear often can be stored in pillow cases. its also a fun reason to have neat retro pillowcases around.
>make a meal out of what you have instead of going to the grocery. you will test with flavors and maybe you'll surprise yourself with a great idea
>go through your books and get rid of the easily-borrowed-at-the-library fictionals.
this will give you more space and get you looking at the books you own to perhaps inspire you in a new way.

“From 2006 through 2010, I traveled throughout the southeastern United States befriending, photographing, and interviewing a network of people who left cities and suburbs to live off the grid. Motivated by environmental concerns, religious beliefs, or predictions of economic collapse, my subjects build their homes from local materials, obtain their water from nearby springs, and hunt, gather, or grow their own food.
All the people in my photographs are working to maintain a self-sufficient lifestyle, but no one I found lives in complete isolation from the mainstream. Many of my subjects have websites that they update using laptop computers, and cell phones that they charge on car batteries or solar panels. They do not wholly reject the modern world. Instead, they step away from it and choose the parts that they want to bring with them. ”
