Slashthree's Quote Unquote
Striving to produce an exhibition that focused on art outside of our norm, the collective selected 'Quote Unquote' as the theme for its seventeenth exhibition. Each piece in “Quote Unquote” is based on a quote – famous, cultural, or even from the artist’s own life – and is created to represent that quote and its meaning to the artist.

a berber woman, photographer unkonwn
Berbers (Berber: Imazighen / Imaziɣen) are the indigenous peoples of North Africa west of the Nile Valley. They are continuously distributed from the Atlantic to the Siwa oasis, in Egypt, and from the Mediterranean to the Niger River. Historically they spoke the Berber language or varieties of it, which together form a branch of the Afro-Asiatic language family. Today, varieties of Maghrebi colloquial Arabic are spoken by a large portion of Berbers besides the Berber language itself. Foreign languages like French are used by the educated in Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria. Spanish is also known by some Berbers in Morocco and in the annexed Western Sahara and Italian in Libya. This presence of European languages was due to Europe's occupation and colonization of the Berber world. Today, most Berber-speaking people live in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Western Sahara, Mauritania, Mali and Niger.[2][3] The presence of the Arabic language and dialects is due to the spread of Islam and to the immigration of some Arab tribes to the region centuries ago. A Berber is not necessarily only someone who happens to speak Berber. The Berber identity is usually wider than language and ethnicity, and encompasses the entire history and geography of North Africa. Berbers are not a homogenous ethnic group and encompass a range of phenotypes, cultures and ancestries. The one unifying force is the Berber language and an identification with the Berber heritage and history.

poem of the day
Eclipse
by roger waters
All that you touch
All that you see
All that you taste
All you feel.
All that you love
All that you hate
All you distrust
All you save.
All that you give
All that you deal
All that you buy,
beg, borrow or steal.
All you create
All you destroy
All that you do
All that you say.
All that you eat
And everyone you meet
All that you slight
And everyone you fight.
All that is now
All that is gone
All that's to come
and everything under the sun is in tune
but the sun is eclipsed by the moon.
"There is no dark side of the moon really. Matter of fact it's all dark."

Herkyna, Lady in the water

Levadia - Greece
Nymphe HERKYNA was a NAIAS and goddess of the river Herkyna in Levadeia.
They say that here Herkyna, when playing with Kore [Persephone], the daughter of Demeter, held a goose which against her will she let loose. The bird flew into a hollow cave and hid under a stone; Kore entered and took the bird as it lay under the stone. The water flowed, they say, from the place where Kore took up the stone, and hence the river received the name Herkyna. On the bank of the river there is a temple of Herkyna, in which is a maiden holding a goose in her arms. In the cave are the sources of the river and images standing, and serpents are coiled around their sceptres. One might conjecture the images be of Asklepios and Hygeia, but they might be Trophonios and Herkyna, because they think that serpents are just as much sacred to Trophonios as Asklepios.” -Pausanias 9.39.2 (Written by KaterinaJordan on Oct 6, 2004)

Quote of the day
"Banish the word 'struggle' from your attitude and your vocabulary. All that we do now must be done in a sacred manner and in celebration. We are the ones we have been waiting for." — Hopi elders
Charon
n Greek mythology, Charon or Kharon is the ferryman of Hades who carries souls of the newly deceased across the rivers Styx and Acheron that divided the world of the living from the world of the dead. A coin to pay Charon for passage, usually an obolus or danake, was sometimes placed in or on the mouth of a dead person.[1] Some authors say that those who could not pay the fee, or those whose bodies were left unburied, had to wander the shores for one hundred years.

rites of passage
i am back in denver, returning home from another home, black rock city. this being my 4th year going to the desert, i really experienced my week in a unique way and learned a lot about myself. i fully opened my heart up to burning man and it has become even more so a part of my daily life and general attitude, shaping my life and yearly cycle. sharing and learning with so many friendly people from around the world was a refreshing, uplifting experience that got me out of a slump i wasn't even fully aware i was in.
i took a couple disposable cameras and did many sketches and journal entries that i will be posting throughout the week as i decompress and recollect my thoughts and belongings.
Sunday night after the temple burn we had our RV packed up and started the long journey home, through all of Nevada, Utah, a little bit of Wyoming and down to denver through laramie and fort collins. our plan was to stop at a lake and jump into water, washing off all the dust. it sounded like heaven and i was really looking forward to a body of nurturing water. instead our battery and alternator failed us and we were stuck in Winnemucca, Nevada for 4 hours.
as Juicy worked under the hood, Griffen and i found a beautiful shady cemetery across the street and laid in the green grass eating foods and making lists of positive things about our trip. reflecting and remembering what we had seen, felt, and been through in those 8 days.
making lists of things that you love, things you want to do more of, art ideas, and mantras feel good and are great to put on a wall/bulletin board/focus board. i want to share some of my lists with you.
