Concept for an inhabitable installation / not realized

Primary fabric on which the wool is tufted can be three dimensionally deformed. Tufted primary fabric is shaped by either straining upper and lower surfaces apart one another or bringing them together on alternate points. After deformation the wool is fixed onto the fabric with several layers of liquid latex and covered by a secondary fabric on the back side. The result is a pair of permanent yet soft and pliant undulating surfaces forming a carnal levitating cave.

In North America, Europe and many other parts of the world, bee populations have plummeted 30-50% due to colony collapse disorder, a fact not lost on artist Aganetha Dyck who for years has been working with the industrious insects to create delicate sculptures using porcelain figurines, shoes, sports equipment, and other objects left in specially designed apiaries. As the weeks and months pass the ordinary objects are slowly transformed with the bees’ wax honeycomb.

It’s almost impossible to look at final pieces without smiling in wonder, imagining the unwitting bees toiling away a piece of art. And yet it’s our own ignorance of humanity’s connection to bees and nature that Dyck calls into question, two completely different life forms whose fate is inextricably intertwined. The Window Socket offers a neat way to harness solar energy and use it as a plug socket. So far we have seen solutions that act as a solar battery backup, but none as a direct plug-in. Simple in design, the plug just attaches to any window and does its job intuitively.

Desert Breath is a Land Art project created by D.A.ST. Arteam. The team was founded in 1995 by: Danae Stratou (installation artist),Alexandra Stratou (industrial designer & architect), Stella Constantinides (architect), for the purpose of creating this project.

The project is rooted in our common desire to work in the desert. In our mind’s eye the desert was a place where one experiences infinity. We were addressing the desert as a state of mind, a landscape of the mind. The point of departure was the conical form, the natural formation of the sand as a material.

+ Quartz field on open space walk

Along a trail of pine trees and grasses we came along a loose collection of Giant quartz with veins of metallic minerals glistening in the sun. Green lichen grew on many of the boulders. Bright pink rose quartz littered the pine needle beds beneath ponderosas like bright white paper scattered in a dark street.
